It is especially sad that only a small piece of this outstanding work has been conserved. Judging by the considerable size of the fragment and the qualities of both its carving and its polychrome decoration, this particular work must surely have formed part of one of the most important examples of Flemish altarpieces ever manufactured. The influence of painting by Rogier van der Weyden has been acknowledged given the fact that the decoration of the piece is very similar to that appearing in the scene of the Swooning of the Holy Virgin painted by this same Master that appears in the triptych of the Seven Sacraments in the Antwerp Fine Arts Museum.
