ALTERATIONS

Moreno Alcalde, M. (1997), states that the altarpiece was re-painted and re-built in 1628 by painter Felipe Lovel, who was also Flemish. Lovel was granted express permission by the Convent to manufacture and replace any missing elements.

In 1730, reformation work was carried out in the church. The design of the ornamentation of the apse was modified and the altarpiece was replaced by another new Baroque style one. The old altarpiece was relocated to the side of the nave, which is where it stands today.

It was probably around then when the scenario was inserted into the Baroque altarpiece that holds it today. Original architecture was replaced as per the popular taste of the period and the relevant frameworks and Gothic traceries were lost.

The original positions of the different carved blocks were also probably modified during one of these interventions, as was the previously-mentioned polychrome decoration. Marks on the wood left behind at some indeterminate time in the past may also be observed.
