HISTORY

The chapel of St. Peter was founded by merchant Juan Sáenz de Herrán y Fernández de Arbieto at the beginning of the XVI century, although we do not know the exact date. In 1494, the Council of Orduña assembled to decide which plot of land was to be allocated so that the chapel could be built. According to Vidal Abarca, construction work was not completed until 1516. On the 24th of November, 1515, Juan Sáenz de Herrán came to an agreement with the church Chapter whereby a celebration was to be perpetually held annually to celebrate its completion. Accordingly, we can safely assume that work on the building was already quite advanced by then.

In his will and testament dated the 29th of March 1516, he specifically mentioned the chapel among the other properties he bequeathed to his successors and designated 300 reales (coins of the period) from the income produced by a vineyard to pay for the chapel's maintenance. The altarpiece would have already existed by then because, had it not, then building of the chapel would have been postponed since the altarpiece was a fundamental part of the same.

In 1898, the chapel was acquired by the Olaso family and in 1906, it was restored in accordance with the project of José Mª Basterra.
