SURROUNDINGS

The Gothic style Church of St. Mary's of Orduña, one of the most monumental style churches in Biscay, has three aisles and sections, a spacious transept and a deep quadrangular altar area. Work began on the church in the second half of the XIII century after the town was granted a Charter by king Alfonso X in 1256. At first, the building formed part of the walled defences of the town. Work was not completed, however, until the beginning of the XVI century.

During that time, private side chapels were built along each of the side sections of the transept. The Renaissance style sacristy also dates from that period although it was later remodelled.

The Neo Classic portico (1789), the Chapel of Christ located to the foot of the church to the north and different work carried out on the tower and choir during the XIX century are the most recent interventions in the church's life.
