SUPPORT AND ELABORATION

Three groups of figures are left from the original altarpiece that was probably a triptych. Each was fashioned from a single piece of tangentially-cut wood. Saw marks may be observed on the back of the blocks. Adzes and gouges were later used to chamfer and fit the figures in the compartment to which they were destined. Marks left behind by the bench clamps of the woodcarver may also be observed on the bases of the figures as well as marks caused by the different saws and gouges used to make the feet of the figures more stable and fit them into the visual plane on which they were to be positioned within the  compartments.

The quality of the wood is normal and knots and twisted fibres may be observed.
