TYPOLOGY

This altarpiece corresponds to those manufactured in an inverted "T" shape since its central section is higher than its two lateral sections. Some details, however, lead us to suspect that the original structure must have been altered: the difference in height between canopies, for example, is less than normal since the two lateral canopies have obviously been raised higher in order to align their tops with the bottom of the central baldachin or canopy, thereby leaving quite a large empty space above the reliefs. We can also observe that pine has been used in the rear panel. Furthermore, pillars topped with corbels and crowned with pinnacles stand higher than the altarpiece's outer frame, something that is not normally found in this type of work.

Canopies are split-level: the outer surface of the lower ones are decorated with pointed arches under palliums whereas the upper ones are decorated with hexagonally-shaped tracery panels that fit into others at right angles. Though the design is probably the original, they have been partially reconstructed.
