TYPOLOGY

Every detail of this altarpiece coincides with the altarpiece dedicated to the Road to Calvary: its format, design of the canopy and openwork, the incorporation of painted wings, etc.. As commented in its data sheet, the altarpiece also resembles that of the Crucifixion. However, it does offer some peculiarities:

Taking all the above into consideration, it has been suggested that the three altarpieces might have formed one single altarpiece made up of the three previously-mentioned altarpieces in which the Road to Calvary relief occupied the central compartment, in a similar fashion to the altarpiece of Saint Lambert currently in the Middle Ages Museum, Paris. Though the idea that the three altarpieces might have responded to this idea when they were first conceived cannot be completely dismissed, other factors, such as the existence of panel paintings on the wings executed with materials customarily found in Nordic manufacturing sources, and even the mention of three altarpieces in the documentation, would seem to invite us to discard it completely.

The altarpiece's frame of Gothic-Mudejar plasterwork is quite unique.
