The Basilica of San Juan Bautista in Telde occupies a plot in the so-called “fortín de la conquista” (stronghold of the conquest) stronghold of the conquest, inside which an older church had been erected, funded by the conquistador Hernán García del Castillo. The construction of the current church, in the Gothic-Mudejar style, began around 1484, at the initiative of his son Cristóbal, and was completed, in fundamentals, around the middle of the 16th Century.
It has a basilica plan with three naves, with the central nave slightly higher and almost twice as wide as the lateral naves (ending in the chapels of San José and San Bartolomé, earlier than 1539) and a straight presbytery, whose chapel was completed around 1552, in which the Holy Christ of Telde is worshipped.
Dating from the 17th Century, we find the chapels of the Virgen of the Rosary (1633) and the chapel of San Ignacio (1696-1699); the baptismal chapel was constructed in the 18th Century. Finally, in 1889 the architect Laureano Arroyo designed its neo-Gothic towers, which were built between 1909 and 1926.
