POLYCHROME DECORATION

The polychrome decoration of the Brabantine altarpiece was reapplied once it was inserted in the Baroque altarpiece (18th Century) and exhibits the same polychrome decoration as this one, with just a few small fragments of the original visible, of which we may appreciate:

- White preparation and a fine layer of light-orange bole, with incised reserve marks for the gilt.

- Gilt, probably burnished, with punching and inscription in white made with a brush on one tunic.

- Flesh tones more subtle and brilliant than those in the reapplied polychrome decoration.

- The Virgen's golden hair.

- Azurite vaults.

- Window casings imitating stained glass.

- Fragments of imitation tiling on the floor.

- Black on the base of the frame, as was customary, and on the footwear of certain characters. In general, the reapplied polychrome decoration replicates the original tones, except in the parts with imitations of red and blue marble.
