The disappearance of many carved Flemish altarpieces rather complicates the task of establishing the precedence of some works, as is indeed the case with the altarpiece at hand. A great variety of possible origins has been suggested. One researcher suggested that the possible origin of this particular altarpiece was Brussels, whilst others maintain that the altarpiece was made in Spain. Despite the rather characteristic style of one of its authors, no other comparable altarpiece has yet been found that would solve this doubt satisfactorily. The most recent proposal suggests once again that the altarpiece was indeed imported.
