Similarities between the figure of the Virgin of Bethlehem and the angels crowning her and drawings conserved in the National Museum of Stockholm and the Louvre Museum have led to specialists having some quite interesting thoughts about their function. According to the most recent hypothesis formulated, both were carried out after the altarpiece had been manufactured. Accordingly, they would appear to have more to do with the spread of Flemish altarpieces rather than with the creative process of this one.
