ALTERATIONS

This small altarpiece has undergone a few alterations that have not affected its overall appearance in the slightest. The hinges joining the wings to the central body are located to the rear. The original hinge used to close the door has lost its pin. Traceries of the wings are missing, as well as some of the applied stars and also the gift that Melchior carried in one of his hands. Quite possibly, the roof seen in the altarpiece conserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, may also be missing in this altarpiece.

The outer frame of the altarpiece has been re polychrome decorated with a marbled effect at some later date after the original decoration had been applied. This re polychrome decoration has been repaired on several occasions using flat colours. The addition of gold leaf on mordant is abundant, mainly in lower areas.
