SUPPORT AND ELABORATION

The central section or body of the altarpiece is made up of two pieces of wood: the back cover that is less than 1cm thick and the other that makes up the whole. The figures stand quite independently and are apparently attached by their rears. Metal traceries are nailed to the mouldings. Two carved panniers are attached to the rear by wooden pegs. The wings of the altarpiece are each made from one single block of wood to which the wise men and their stands have been attached. Hinges on the protective wings are the original ones, with the exception of the ones to the front. Small cavities may be seen along the lower perimeter, possibly made to fit the doors better and to make closing the wings easier.

The interior of the altarpiece is profusely decorated with applied elements: wooden spheres (0.5 cm in diameter), metal flowers with six petals (1.3 cm) and stars in the shape of snowflakes with glass stones at their centres (2.5 cm).

On Gaspar's cape, the wood has been carved in relief to imitate fur.
