ALTARPIECE OF THE EPIPHANY

OBSERVATIONS

The Victoria and Albert Museum, London has an altarpiece that is practically identical to the one in the Artajona parish church. It is dated from around the year 1500 and is closely linked to workshops in Brussels and Mechelen. Of the thirteen similar works that have been conserved, these are the only two altarpieces which represent the Epiphany.

The remaining altarpieces are dedicated to the Annunciation: (one in Leiden and another belonging to a private Belgian collector, both of which are diptyches), the Nativity (Arras), the Pietà (one example auctioned by Sotheby's in 1998 and another in Lille, the latter of which is much larger than all the others), ), the Coronation of the Virgin (whose whereabouts are currently unknown), Christ, the Man of Sorrows (two examples: one in Amsterdam and another in Cologne) and St. Cristobal Between Two Saints (whose whereabouts are also unknown).
