STYLE

Considering the minute size of the figures that are barely eight centimetres tall and the wear and tear they have suffered over time, we are undoubtedly standing before the work of an extremely talented woodcarver who must have been a true specialist as far as working in a reduced format is concerned.

Even when examined closely, the figures present very precise characteristics with their serene, pleasant features and expressions and their fine garments. This is particularly evident in the figure of the Holy Virgin, for example, with her round, plump face, almond-shaped eyes and well-defined mouth, all features represented in the style typical of Mechelen. In  general, all the figures contribute to making this altarpiece a particularly attractive one, even down to the way the waves in hair have been barely suggested owing to the reduced dimensions of the figures.

The firm spill of folds in their garments is present on most of the figures. These pleats and folds, together with their postures, give them a suggestive elegance that is especially patent in the potential dynamism of the figure of Balthazar.
