STYLE

The altarpiece contains figures carved by two different artists in the scenarios of the older and more conservative Apostolate in the lateral sections and in the Lamentation Over the Body of Christ, which is more recent and evolved.

Should we observe the apostolic college figures dating from around 1435 more closely, we can still observe traces reminding us of international Gothic style with their slim figures that are turned slightly to one side and their bowed heads with their longish faces and elegant gestures. With the exception of the two much-later figures in the right lateral section, they are the work of sculptor Willem Ards who had established himself in Brussels.

A greater characterisation of figures may be observed in the central relief, not only regarding the diversity of their features, but also their robes and in the treatment of different textiles, something that has allowed us to associate this work with that of an anonymous sculptor and woodcarver who was also active in Brussels at the same period and who was responsible for the altarpiece of the Passion in Ternant (France) manufactured around 1450.
