This altarpiece is known as the altarpiece of Las Navas de Tolosa which is not only the name of a famous battle, but also the name of the chapel in which it originally stood. According to tradition, the altarpiece's railings were partially made with chains from the tent of Caliph Miramamolín al-Nasir who king Sancho VII, the Strong took to the kingdom of Navarre after the Battle of the Reconquest in Jaen.
