THE DESCENT

OBSERVATIONS

From a composition and iconographic point of view, the protagonism given to Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus and his servant is most unusual when compared to the majority of other representations of this particular subject. Normally, their figures would be placed in a more discreet background position in benefit of the figures of Mary Magdalene, the Virgin and St. John. Indeed, in this particular work, they all occupy secondary, background positions.
