THE LAMENTATION OVER THE DEAD CHRIST ALTARPIECE

OBSERVATIONS

In the Pamplona Registry of 1427, a name appears among the contributors of the Burgh of St. Cernín: it is the name of a resident, a merchant by profession, who lived on a road that is now the High Street. His name was Pedro de Mutiloa and he was probably the very same man whose name is mentioned in the inscription to the tomb: "this burial place was commissioned by the honourable Pedro de Multiloa, 1506". Accordingly, we can identify him as being the person who commissioned the chapel of St. Peter of Antioquia (San Pedro de Antioquia). This chapel was probably built by his descendants after his death as per a clause in his will, although we cannot completely rule out there being two members of the same family with exactly the same name. In any case, it certainly indicates what his professional profile and social-economic position was.
