ALTERATIONS 

When the work was incorporated into the neo-Gothic altarpiece, it is obvious that certain important architectural elements were obviously altered: original walling, decoration, possibly painted wings,, etc. were all probably lost, quite apart from other alterations that might have been carried out earlier, such as the previously-mentioned alteration to the polychrome decoration. 

The flesh painting of the figure of Christ has been re polychrome decorated on at least two earlier occasions and we can see the direct consequences of an aggressive, lax cleaning.
