ALTERATIONS

The sculptural groups are not presented in their original structures. Three reliefs have been located in the niches of the main altarpiece and another two (and four carvings) with their respective cases on the sides. These have been altered, eliminating the base and the doors, and partially replacing baldachins and panels on the rear. In general, the support has not been well-preserved, with breaks, gaps, attacks by xylophages and cracks caused by malformations.

The thick re-polychrome decoration of the reliefs of the main altarpiece has caused considerable craquelure with adhesion problems, while the side pieces currently offer a combination of neoclassical re-polychrome decoration, original polychrome (worn and altered) and extensive recent reintegrations. The intervention carried out by J. Martinena in 2004, who “cleaned and restored the three altarpieces”, has left obvious marks. There are considerable remains of paint-stripper and cotton wool adhered, and thus an intervention is recommended to eliminate this.
