STYLE

The Castillonuevo carvings and reliefs show considerable variety in the characterisation of the faces, especially in the apostles of the Pentecost relief, with expectant expressiveness, prominent noses and chins, and different hair styles. As usual, the images of the soldiers of the Passion passage are more expressive and caricature-like.  The folds of the clothing are well-defined, but not particularly sharp.

The carvings on the sides, with refined and elegant postures, have a more melancholic demeanour, with slanted eyes and slightly drooping mouths, more obvious in the saint with armour. In this aspect, they are similar to Antwerp works, as well as some of the carvings of Era de la Mota. Their lateralized arrangement is also typical of this area, although here they are much larger than normal.

These features are only partially recognised in the reliefs of the main altarpiece, very anecdotal, but no longer well-defined due to repainting.
