HISTORY

Due to a lack of documentation, confirmation of the presence of these reliefs and carvings in the church of Castillonuevo was not possible until shortly before 1928, when they were included in an inventory of parish assets, which already situated them in their current location.

All these pieces were recovered and placed in Baroque altarpieces that date back to the end of the 18th century, which are also undocumented, as the oldest book of accounts was started in 1892. Furthermore, the fact that the attics of the collateral retables do not adapt to the interior cornice of the temple suggests that these, at least, may have been made for another church. Perhaps the reliefs were not originally produced for the Castillonuevo parish church, either, as there is no knowledge of the existence of an important local promoter in the 16th century. That would explain a popular tradition that ensures that these works may have arrived there by chance on their way to another destination.
