SURROUNDINGS

St. Mary's Cathedral  with its spacious transept and apse comprises three naves in the shape of a Latin cross. It was built mainly in Gothic style during the last quarter of the XIII century and the XIV century, which was when its magnificent doors located at the foot of the building and perhaps one of the building's most outstanding features, were added. In 1496, after the temple was promoted to the status of collegiate church, it was decided to replace the doors' original wooden coverings for stone ones: a decision that led to a multitude of structural problems resulting in the temple finally being closed for worship.

For several years now, however, cathedral visitors can observe the outstanding restoration process that is being carried out on the building. This process not only allows us to recover the building as such, but has also permitted us to learn more about the origins of the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz itself and the existence of the two churches that existed before today's building and how they positively influenced, and indeed stimulated, the cultural life of the city.
