STYLE

The altarpiece presents very different characteristics as far as the style of its reliefs and architectural structure are concerned. The former were carried out in traditional style with a series of small figures grouped together on three different optical planes to give a greater impression of depth. The human figures are characterised by the lack of physical definition of their facial features which could be described as being very vaguely defined. They are more easily recognisable, however, on account of their polychrome glazes, claddings and finishes rather than for their different volumes, as may be observed in the treatment of hair and beards. Execution of the folds and pleats of clothing is also sadly wanting. A certain static attitude is observed in the compositions, all of which offer a somewhat naïve air, even in the modest way they are arranged spatially.

Their architecture and decoration, on the other hand, reveal a precise, cutting-edge knowledge of Renaissance repertory as per the Fontainebleau school. This includes the use of therms, masks, hanging fabrics and coraciiform and grotesque decoration inspired by the works of Cornelis Floris and Cornelis Bos.
